Wichita Union Station, constructed in
19?? is typical of a mid-sized city depot that served a handfull of
passenger rail carriers. The Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe (Santa Fe),
Chicago Rock Island and Pacific (Rock Island), St Louis and San Francisco
(Frisco), and for a time the Midland Valley called this depot home.
Amtrak closed the passenger rail function of the depot in 1979 when the
Lone Star
was discontinued. Standing on the platform today will still send one back. Today the depot houses Cox Cable offices with the train platform canopies serving as a base for numerous satellite antennas. The platform area is now used for parking. In 2004 a freight train derailment knocked down a portion of the western most train canopies. |
